Urban Buses in Budapest

Budapest has over 200 bus lines that reach most parts of the city but, despite its extensive network, the easiest ways to get around the city centre are by tram or metro, avoiding the city’s traffic jams.

The most useful bus routes for tourists are 16, 16A and 116. These three lines run from Pest to the Castle District. The routes cross Chain Bridge, stopping at the Royal Palace, Matthias Church, Fisherman’s Bastion and Budapest History Museum.

Helpful tips

Like in the city of Porto in Portugal, bus drivers tend to drive quite fast, even when climbing the narrow streets in Buda, so remember to hold on tight.

Just before getting to your stop, press the button next to the exit door if you are the only passenger to get off, otherwise, the bus driver won’t stop.
